Now, when the day goes to sleep and the full moon looks
The night is so black that the darkness cooks
Don't you come creepin' around - makin' me do things I don't want to

Can't believe that you need my love so bad
Come sneakin' around tryin' to drive me mad
Bustin' in on my dreams - making me see things I don't wanna see

'Cause you're da Green Manalishi with the two prong crown
All my tryin' is up - all your bringin' is down
Just taking my love then slippin' away
Leavin' me here just tryin' to keep from following you

i skipped the  filling, not that it isn't good, just didn't fit my mood. But I'm staying with this! Just realized they are from the same year (the bread parts).
Thanks for the 'Story behind the song', William. I for one appreciate that
kind of context for a song. Also, makes me nostalgic for the old FM
radio stations that I grew up on.

But without the commercials. SO IF YOU AREN'T A CONTRIBUTOR, why not kick in a few bucks? :-)

Thank you for playing original Fleetwood Mac! Been a fan since day one. Thank you Peter Green!

Nice!  And somewhat reminiscent of the woman who reads the poem "Bare Trees" on that album (Bare Trees) and her relationship to the band.

If anyone gets to see a DVD or even stream of  the concert Mick Fleetwood (and Friends) did in London celebrating Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green - the version of this is fantastic AND, as a bonus,  Kirk Hammet is playing Peter Green's guitar.
wow

i thought this was cream
The version I've been listening to for years now is from the 3 disc set Men Of The World and there's no shrieking to be heard.  That's a fine collection; disc 2 is In The Studio and there's a crazy good long version of Searching For Madge from which they chose excerpts for the album Then Play On. The interplay between Green and Kirwan is absolutely incredible.

I haven't heard the version played here currently recently enough to know exactly what you are describing but every version I have and have heard over the years has had the shrieking you mention.  I have been listening to this song since it was brand new.

I just played the three versions that I have including the CD version from the 25 years Box set.  They are all the same as far as the content.  Not sure if the version BG has is from the 25 years set as the picture does not always match the actual source.  Now the mix on the CD box set is different from the original that I have a copy of from a 1970's UK Greatest Hits pressing and the most recent 2020 vinyl Then Play On release as a bonus track.  The CD is remixed with the vocals set off the mostly in the right channel.  The original and the 2020 release has the vocals in the center, which I prefer.  The 2020 release is by far superior to the CD box set, fwiw, imho ...

What you think is the original is likely some radio station edited single or something similar.  Hard to say because I cannot find any listing for a different version.

Now I'm listening to a 16 minute live version from their Greatest Hits Live CD.  It flippin' rocks, that is if you like things stretched out for maximum listening pleasure.

Cheers !

D@3*n but I love the original Fleetwood Mac!
This is why they wanted it to be Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac. incredible
I met Peter Green in 2003. Nice guy although not particularly chatty.
I asked him if he had any advice for me at the beginning of my music career, and he just replied' Nope'

He also refused to shake anyone's hands to protects his fingers! So sad he's no longer with us. A god.
The best years!
Then just nine years later (via album) and a whopping 31 years for this live performance = a different, perhaps more driving (including the shrieking), take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Though being depressed and on drugs, Peter Green did a lot of great Blues music after Fleetwood Mac
I remember hearing this masterpiece in 1970, entering a big discotheque with a huge speaker equipment, watching all these psychedelic moving artworks on the wall. It was played very loud and I was flashed. Sweet memories
Like Alice Cooper, King Crimson, Uriah Heep and others from the 70's it has that dark creepy feel...

10 bucks in 1979?  That is like $35 now.  Big spender.
I never listened to Fleetwood Mac back in the day, and never really liked the "newer" version enough to buy anything... but now I see why my older brother was a fan of this era and was so disappointed with the "newer" poppier band.

Nice.  Never heard that version by Fleetwood Mac.  Love the extra deep cuts, even if I have to give a tip of the hat to Judas Priest for their rendition.

So I assume the deranged vocals at the end was Peter Green running around the studio and out the door, never to be seen again! Barking, absolutely barking!!! {#Bananasplit} {#Frustrated}
There is also a version by FM that doesn't have the eerie vocalizations.

The absolute best incarnation of Fleetwood Mac.

I recommend their Then Play On album to you.

Before that, it was all the usual Englishmen make like Chicago blues guys, albeit excellent players.

After Then Play On, Danny Kirwan briefly led the band (Kiln House—a ROCKER) until Bob Welch came along. With him came a series of very listenable albums: Bare Trees, Future Games, Penguin, Mystery To Me, Heroes Are Hard To Find, etc.

The Peter Green-era Bluesbreakers still has some classics: The Supernatural, for starters.

Holy, never heard that one before.
I like it, made me think of Tull from the same time period.
Another gem Bill & co. thanks.
Wow.
This is pretty amazing. I guess I should listen to more of their stuff of that period.
Huh? Weird. Great. Not Rhiannon.  More like Captain Beefheart.
The best
Terrific.
This was artistic rock and roll that was never matched without Green.  Too often with Nicks and Buckingham the group edged toward pop music.
Absolutely CLASSIC! They were never the same after Peter Green left. Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie all played with John Mayall and it was Peter Green that took Fleetwood and McVie with him in 1967. The Band's original name after all was "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac". He was the heart and soul. Fleetwood Mac became a joke with Buckingham Nicks.

Read about Peter Green here --> https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Peter_Green
{#Heartkiss}  This is most definitely GODLIKE
Yes, when Fleetwood Mac was actually a great band and not the commercial sellout of 1975 and later. Buckingham and Nicks was the ruin of a great band!

From Wikipedia:

"Green has explained that he wrote the song after experiencing a drug-induced dream, in which he was visited by a green dog which barked at him. He understood that the dog represented money. "It scared me because I knew the dog had been dead a long time. It was a stray and I was looking after it. But I was dead and had to fight to get back into my body, which I eventually did."

It's been said that people struggling with emotional or psychological issues, as Peter Green was, are more likely to "freak-out" on LSD (Acid), which Green apparently had been taking steadily.  Acid has a tendency to lay bare the layers of personality, so that it is easier to see inside yourself and thus into your dark side.  I find it interesting that his last name is Green and the dog was green.  I wonder if he was seeing a side of himself that he couldn't bear to look at.

...Now back to deciphering the ZOSO and Sergeant Pepper album sleeves!

Actually, his last name is really Greenbaum. So was he looking to apply some the mad dog's saliva on himself as a balm? And why does the end of the song suddenly, uh, peter out?
Wow, I am hardly a music neophyte — but I have *never* heard this song before...
