Paranoia is in bloom
The P.R. transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down
And hope that we will never see the truth around (so come on)

Another promise, another seed
Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed
And all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined (so come on)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious (so come on)

Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take its toll
If you could flick a switch and open your third eye
You'd see that we should never be afraid to die (so come on)

Rise up and take the power back
It's time the fat cats had a heart attack
You know that their time's coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend (so come on)

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious (so come on)

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious (so come on)

Hey, hey, hey, hey

Sounds like the theme from "Dr.  Who"

Perhaps you need some compliance.

"Compliance is about the promise of safety and reassurance sold to us by powerful entities during times of vulnerability. Gangs, governments, demagogues, social-media algorithms and religions seduce us with misleading untruths and comforting fables. They want us to join their narrow worldview in exchange for obedience and turning a blind eye to our own internal voice of reason and compassion. They just need our compliance."  (MUSE)

Um... were you fast asleep during 2020-2022-ish?...
And... perhaps still quite sleepy?
Lucky You.

I'd say "They" are those who OWN Big Pharma, Corporate Media, Corrupt Governments, Lobbyists, Hollywood, WEF, WHO, CDC, NATO... and all those who fall in line like little brownshirts (or black masks) to carry out "Their" orders.  :/

Is Ignorance really Bliss? Just curious.

The segue from Metric to Muse was absolutely sublime.
Wonderful song. Muse actually satirised this song with "Will of the People", but unfortunately most people thought they were being serious. Any band that satirises their own songs get a point in my book, though - irreverence is such an underrated virtue these days.
This song didn't aged well; after all music belongs to great music and some of the music on this album caught my ear at the time of its release but not anymore.
Definitely an 11. Saw them live in Toronto a few years ago. Spectacular.

Great!
Excellent!!
Great band great lyrics
"Make 1984 Fiction Again" is a 'WeAreChange' T-Shirt slogan (and spot on at that)
I'm still at a 9 on this powerful number, maybe whenever I get a real BIG big system it'll knock this up to the 10 spot.
LONG LIVE RP and fighting the power!!!
Saw them open for U2 several years ago. My comment after the first song: U2 better be good because this band is AWESOME! They really bring it live.

The year prior they released The Beautiful People, which sounds very reminiscent in the percussion doesn't it?

Though they both sound like Gary Glitter (Hey) to my ears, so... I suspect both were influenced?
I love this song.
This is the kind of "music" that makes me want yo get up and put on some actual music.
Does anyone else hear Blondie’s ‘Call Me’?
While visiting LA a couple of years ago this album got me through driving on the freeways. Excellent!

The oldest Muse was even more likeable. Their debut album was still the best in my opinion. The first album sounded more like an out of control prog-rocky Radiohead 'the Bends' although I would not want to compare them with Radiohead. Muse takes itself much less serious.
La caña !!! Poderío !!!
OK, this should be the new Doctor Who Theme.

Doctor WhhoooooA!
I lost some of my respect for this song when it was played at Victoria's Secret fashion show, I think for the "victorious - Victoria's" part :)

No. The whole album is based on Orwell's 1984. This song is an integral part of the album, and shouldn't be judged aside from it. Rebellion, and its eventual crushing, is at the very heart of 1984. Try reading it and you'll be amazed and disturbed by how relevant it is today. As in the 40s, the Security State still pushes the slogans: Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, War is Peace.

This is a concept album in the very best sense of that phrase.

I'm a big fan of Orwell's "1984."  Muse trying to coattail it is an interesting idea, except that they botched the music part.  Liking the book is one thing; unfortunately, the coattails just can't help Muse.  PSD!

great reply, fredriley....and oddly enough while reading it I thought "I don't remember posting that" because it sounds almost exactly what I might have said. My wife and I recently re-read the book and re-watched the 1984 version of 1984 (the one with a very bushy Suzanna Hamilton and (recently deceased) John Hurt) - and we just happened to do this on April 4th, which is the date Winston wrote in his illegal diary.
As a new fan of Muse's music I will FOR SURE check out the entire album...I love concept albums! Long Live RP!!

It bombastic, sure, but it's fun. I get that Arcade Fire (nothing against them, they're anthem-tastic for sure) represent the height of serious muso-rock for some, but I love that these guys seem to have injected a little humor into their riffs.
Bill is on his game; great song in celebration of 1984 and rebellion.

I know Americans who can name the Dr. Whos, in order.  Series has been a hit here for decades.
The fact that this song is used to promote a first-person shooter video game is all you need to know.
Overplayed and not one of their best, but have to admit I'm a big Muse fan. One of the best live acts touring these days, so much talent and energy.

Apologies to those who like it, but I'm just sitting here waiting for it to be over.  Seems to trudge along like an large, sluggish, unpleasant quadriped in mud, with about as much musical ability.

But hey, if you like it, I'm happy for you.
Do these guys do this song wearing lycra pants and poofy hair? Is it 1985?
THEY are so naughty!
YEAH!!!
Also good one!
Sounds like bombastic Queen to me. That's not bad... just bombastic/arena rock/self indulgent, which is ok once in a while.

YES that's the word I've been trying to find for years re: Muse...KITCHY!

I have a love/hate with them -- I love then when I'm exercises -- but their music feels so silly, insincere and over-the-top w/out any pretty scenery at the top.

Very strange..no other group does that to me.

My son loves this song - it's really grown on me - rockin'!!
Tying the 1984 theme mentioned earlier into the Glen Miller classic we heard a few songs back, from Wikipedia:

After reintegration to Oceanian society, Winston encounters Julia in a park; each admits having betrayed the other:

"I betrayed you," she said baldly.
"I betrayed you," he said.
She gave him another quick look of dislike.
"Sometimes," she said, "they threaten you with something – something you can't stand up to, can't even think about. And then you say, 'Don't do it to me, do it to somebody else, do it to so-and-so.' And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn't really mean it. But that isn't true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there's no other way of saving yourself and you're quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don't give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself."
"All you care about is yourself," he echoed.
"And after that, you don't feel the same toward the other person any longer."
"No," he said, "you don't feel the same."

Throughout, a song recurs in Winston's mind:

Under the spreading chestnut tree
I sold you and you sold me—

The lyrics are an adaptation of ‘Go no more a-rushing’, a popular English campfire song from the 1920s, that was a popular success for Glen Miller in 1939.

Sarah, I suggest that you read back through the comments on this board. This song, and the album, is inspired by George Orwell's classic dystopia 1984. Hence the references in the song to "green belts" and "mind control". The "they" is Big Brother and the Party.

Don't be so harsh on yourself - I'm sure you can write non-drivel. Calling this "predictable" is the clincher - is it "predictable" that a rock band would write a whole album inspired by Orwell's 1984? IIRC only Eurythmics have done the same. Feel free to loathe Muse for pomposity, cheesiness, going over the top, pretentiousness, all of which criticisms have been applied to them on this board, and fair play to the commenters - taste is a subjective thing. "Drivel" maybe, but "predictable"? I don't think so.
