The P.R. transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down
And hope that we will never see the truth around (so come on)
Another promise, another seed
Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed
And all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined (so come on)
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious (so come on)
Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take its toll
If you could flick a switch and open your third eye
You'd see that we should never be afraid to die (so come on)
Rise up and take the power back
It's time the fat cats had a heart attack
You know that their time's coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend (so come on)
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious (so come on)
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious (so come on)
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Perhaps you need some compliance.
"Compliance is about the promise of safety and reassurance sold to us by powerful entities during times of vulnerability. Gangs, governments, demagogues, social-media algorithms and religions seduce us with misleading untruths and comforting fables. They want us to join their narrow worldview in exchange for obedience and turning a blind eye to our own internal voice of reason and compassion. They just need our compliance." (MUSE)
Who on Earth is "They" ?!?!?!?
Um... were you fast asleep during 2020-2022-ish?...
And... perhaps still quite sleepy?
Lucky You.
I'd say "They" are those who OWN Big Pharma, Corporate Media, Corrupt Governments, Lobbyists, Hollywood, WEF, WHO, CDC, NATO... and all those who fall in line like little brownshirts (or black masks) to carry out "Their" orders. :/
Is Ignorance really Bliss? Just curious.
Why is it that every band I like is fielding Marshall amps?
Perhaps it's no small thanks to Blue Oyster Cult's
The Marshall Plan
The powers that (shouldn't) be; those who perpetuate war; omnipresent governments; Big Brother

I think the demise has more to do with someone like Phil Collins or Billy Joel.
I love Billy Joel, but I get your point. This song went from 8 to 9 for me.
I'm still at a 9 on this powerful number, maybe whenever I get a real BIG big system it'll knock this up to the 10 spot.
LONG LIVE RP and fighting the power!!!
Hmm, I just rated it a 5
Starting at an 8 going to a 9....now
Marilyn Manson should make a cover of this song
The year prior they released The Beautiful People, which sounds very reminiscent in the percussion doesn't it?
Though they both sound like Gary Glitter (Hey) to my ears, so... I suspect both were influenced?
If you think rock is dead, you haven't been paying attention.
Actually you may be right...but not why you think...
The oldest Muse was even more likeable. Their debut album was still the best in my opinion. The first album sounded more like an out of control prog-rocky Radiohead 'the Bends' although I would not want to compare them with Radiohead. Muse takes itself much less serious.
Doctor WhhoooooA!
You wouldn't know what to resist if you were going to resist
and you aren't going to resist, so stop signaling
Me? Love it, a strong 9 here reflecting my general liking of Muse, and yes to those other commentators, they know exactly how Kitschy and anachronistic the sound is, and go all out to exploit it, being a Modern yet Glam rock sound for the new millenia...
Hmm, I just rated it a 5
i'm a tad offended by that "(Americans don't have to answer....)" dig.
i've been a fan since Tom Baker and got my kids and wife (who's not a sci fi fan) into the Doctor. we miss David Tenant's Doctor and Carla (? i think that was her name - way too cute)
as for the echoes, i'm sure they're buried in there
Well, if anyone needs more of the Doctor than Muse's hints, there's always the 11th Doctor sitting in with Orbital at Glastonbury…

I am another American a tad bit offended by that! Of course, the entire world is no doubt offended by our dear leader so, I guess it balances out.

I'd actually known at least some of that. Phenomenal story!
No. The whole album is based on Orwell's 1984. This song is an integral part of the album, and shouldn't be judged aside from it. Rebellion, and its eventual crushing, is at the very heart of 1984. Try reading it and you'll be amazed and disturbed by how relevant it is today. As in the 40s, the Security State still pushes the slogans: Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, War is Peace.
This is a concept album in the very best sense of that phrase.
I'm a big fan of Orwell's "1984." Muse trying to coattail it is an interesting idea, except that they botched the music part. Liking the book is one thing; unfortunately, the coattails just can't help Muse. PSD!
These lyrics are so lame. Pseudo-rebellion, wannabe counter-culture tripe. I like this band when they don't pretend to be renegades. Sing about girls. You're better at that.

great reply, fredriley....and oddly enough while reading it I thought "I don't remember posting that" because it sounds almost exactly what I might have said. My wife and I recently re-read the book and re-watched the 1984 version of 1984 (the one with a very bushy Suzanna Hamilton and (recently deceased) John Hurt) - and we just happened to do this on April 4th, which is the date Winston wrote in his illegal diary.
As a new fan of Muse's music I will FOR SURE check out the entire album...I love concept albums! Long Live RP!!

Yea a little, I was thinking more Blonde actually. Once it gets going it is neither out side of the use of the synthesizer.
I third that thought...don't hit the PSD button much, but...

Bullshit. Americans absolutely have to answer. Dr. Who played on PBS over here for years. As for this song, I'm guessing that these guys have no idea that they're paying homage to that particular cultural phenomenon. Having seen them perform i get the distinct impression that they don't realize how unintentionally kitchy their music is.
I know Americans who can name the Dr. Whos, in order. Series has been a hit here for decades.

Somewhat in certain places, but the lyrics in this tune aren't as profound.

YES that's the word I've been trying to find for years re: Muse...KITCHY!
I have a love/hate with them -- I love then when I'm exercises -- but their music feels so silly, insincere and over-the-top w/out any pretty scenery at the top.
Very strange..no other group does that to me.
(Americans don't have to answer....)
I'm american and yes!
Sing it, comrade!

I really find it hard to believe that they are truly taking themselves so seriously with this song.

Agree...
"They" are very naughty people.
(Americans don't have to answer....)
After reintegration to Oceanian society, Winston encounters Julia in a park; each admits having betrayed the other:
"I betrayed you," she said baldly.
"I betrayed you," he said.
She gave him another quick look of dislike.
"Sometimes," she said, "they threaten you with something – something you can't stand up to, can't even think about. And then you say, 'Don't do it to me, do it to somebody else, do it to so-and-so.' And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn't really mean it. But that isn't true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there's no other way of saving yourself and you're quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don't give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself."
"All you care about is yourself," he echoed.
"And after that, you don't feel the same toward the other person any longer."
"No," he said, "you don't feel the same."
Throughout, a song recurs in Winston's mind:
Under the spreading chestnut tree
I sold you and you sold me—
The lyrics are an adaptation of ‘Go no more a-rushing’, a popular English campfire song from the 1920s, that was a popular success for Glen Miller in 1939.
I think the demise has more to do with someone like Phil Collins or Billy Joel.
first song of the show... Friesian horses with their riders all masked up in black and silver... SOOOOooo cool! a bit scary if you were to see one of these horses coming at you in the middle of the night....

oh did the music fit.
25 years after the actual year 1984? No, can't say I saw that one coming.
...bah: this is fun...
Sarah, I suggest that you read back through the comments on this board. This song, and the album, is inspired by George Orwell's classic dystopia 1984. Hence the references in the song to "green belts" and "mind control". The "they" is Big Brother and the Party.
Huh - dancing smileys don't work anymore?
Yes, please!
complete drivel! simplistic, mundane, and predictable. in the rotation for far too long.
Don't be so harsh on yourself - I'm sure you can write non-drivel. Calling this "predictable" is the clincher - is it "predictable" that a rock band would write a whole album inspired by Orwell's 1984? IIRC only Eurythmics have done the same. Feel free to loathe Muse for pomposity, cheesiness, going over the top, pretentiousness, all of which criticisms have been applied to them on this board, and fair play to the commenters - taste is a subjective thing. "Drivel" maybe, but "predictable"? I don't think so.
Yes, equal parts Call Me and Doctor Who!
So true. There doesn't appear to be an original thought anywhere in this mess.
You mean I came all this way and there isn't a mirror ball ? There isn't even a poster of John Travolta anywhere !
Well I'm outta here. .. . .
Why is it that every band I like is fielding Marshall amps?
IDK? To each their own. I actually prefer the sound of Fender amps. Twin Reverb and Dual Showman. There are not many people using Dual Showman amps these days.
