I saw The National on this tour and one of the guitar players mentioned their nickname for the lead singer is "Mumbles." It didn't seem to be a criticism as much as he was pointing fun at band for having someone with the nick-name of "Mumbles" be their lead singer.

The voice is an instrument. The clarity of intonation is pretty low on my list of criteria as to whether I like the sound. Obviously it's all subjective, so there's no right or wrong, but your criticism reminds me of someone saying that Neil Young's guitar on Cinnamon Girl isn't clear and crisp enough. It's either got a nice tone, or it doesn't. Mumbling has little to do with it, IMO.

Perhaps, especially since none of their members had a voice as deep as this fellow does.  However, in the comments for just about every song on the RP playlist, someone "hears Pink Floyd", so you're not alone in that aspect.

Why is it that every time I hear a song by The National, I think it's someone else?  Knee-jerk reaction, I guess.  Still, I love this song - guess maybe I just don't want to attribute huge kudos to this group because I'd never heard them before RP.
