I'm watching the water
Watching the coast
Suddenly I know
What I want the most

And I want to tell you
Still I hold back
I need some time
Get my life on track

I know that look on your face
But there's somethin' lucky about this place
And there's somethin' good comin'
For you and me
Somethin' good comin'
There has to be

And I'm thinking 'bout mama
And about the kids
And the way we lived
And the things we did

How she never had a chance
Never caught a break
And how we pay for our big mistakes

I know so well the look on your face

And there's somethin' lucky about this place

There's somethin' good comin'

Just over the hill

Somethin' good comin'

I know it will

And I'm in for the long run

Wherever it goes

Ridin' the river

Wherever it goes

And I'm an honest man

Work's all I know

You take that away

Don't know where to go

And I know that look that's on your face

There's somethin' lucky about this place

There's somethin' good comin'

For you and me

Somethin' good comin'

There has to be

Nope.
Can't help but remember the last things my mom said to me as she passed from cancer... I was in Tokyo, hoping to get back to see her one more time... We'd remained in touch, but so much family drama had forced distance and estrangement along every branch of the tree... She said, "It hasn't always been good for you, has it? But I tell you something, honey -- there's something good coming, you'll see." I realize that the times I truly felt hopeless were the worst. Hope is like gravity; without it we cannot be rooted nor present in the moment, without which we cannot move forward at all...

It must have been frustrating for so many of the rockers from the last century to no longer be able to reach their audiences through mainstream radio. Many of them seemed to have either given up or faded away, but Tom Petty continued to put out original tunes and top quality music until the end of his much-too-short life.
He’s kind of the electric counterpart to John Prine. Simple style, simple lyrics but somehow tells a compelling story. That’s one definition of elegant.
And also miss the songs he won't be giving in the future that isn't.

No disrespect to the dead, itsme_bygolly writes, and then spunks its ill-informed disrespectful opinion all over the internet.  Unless you knew him personally of course?  Thought not.

I am not a Tom Petty fan (I know, how dare me) but this is an excellent song. Well written and nicely produced.
A favorite TP tune, along with Angel Dream #2 and Room At The Top
We miss you Tom, you were maybe the most under rated songwriters of the last 40 years.
Tom Petty was another musician who I somehow passed by without listening, until Radio Paradise, through repeated exposures, led me to recognize how good he was. Not many can write something like this and make it work. I suspect he saw himself as in some way maintaining the type of perspective on his culture as Woody Guthrie. I don't suggest much more similarity than that, but this particular song has that sense of striving for an American success, despite the array of obstacles. It could be in the Florida panhandle or Oklahoma.
Very nice Very sweat
Ici, en Quebec, c'est toujours l'hiver !
Saw Mike Campbell sing this with the Dirty Knobs. There were tears.... Bitter sweet.
And I'm in for the long run, he said

Well we don't always get the chance.  Miss you Tom.

Absolutely friend.  Tell that to the chumps that are now pushing the Carey and Bieber  "duet" down our throats this festive time.
GREAT - optimistic and sad equally - great emotions - thats why music was invented to cause such feelings...

Like the wind, a great meal. or a fine song, Tom vanished from our world.  But oh the memories.....
Imagine a world in which this beautiful song were a top 40 hit.  What world would that be?  A lot better one.
So good.
Much missed. Sadly premature loss.
{#Cry}
Mike Campbell sang this last Saturday night with the Dirty Knobs at Soho in Santa Barbara. The place was in tears....Mike included. We all miss Tom so much.
For not knowing the man personally, I sure grieve his passing.  His music 'reached' me for decades....always will.  I guess in a way I did know him personally {#Cool}
One of his last and most optimistic.  The more one listens to it, the more it becomes his epitaph.  RIP, Sir Thomas.

That's too bad. I know he cancelled some shows in August due to Laryngitis. He sure rocked the arena when I saw him a couple of years ago.

As we now know, Tom was dealing with some serious health issues all summer but decided to just plow through.  RIP.

Something Good Coming indeed. RIP Tom
Good selection on this day, following Tom's passing yesterday. Hope something good came for him after all he went through with Big-D. Terry Gross reprized a nice interview with him today on Fresh Air. Sad loss, indeed.
I simply love this song...It really speaks to me  {#Meditate}{#Hearteyes}

Me, too.  Could it be his voice, drained of all happiness and optimism, declaring that there's something good coming?
Well considering that today is inauguration day.....
One of Petty's best songs in recent years !!
In the background of on scene in Halt and Catch Fire there are two dudes arguing about Tom Petty.  You can hear one guy argue along the lines that everybody likes Tom Petty, it is just a matter of whether or not you choose to admit it.  I freely admit it, I love Petty's work in general, and this is a particularly good one.

another wonderful song from Tom Petty. I love his storytelling abilities; like Bruce Springsteen. They sure can bring stories to life.

Are you familiar with what is called in statistics a "normal distribution"?  Like a bell-curve?  You are not by any means the only person rating songs at RP with a strange rating distribution.  I don't rate on a curve, personally, I let the chips fall where they may and try to reserve the 1-rating for songs I really dislike.  But the fact you have such a high number of "sucko-barfo" ratings is surprising.  Like I said, a lot of people here have similar distributions.  You are not alone.

Great song of reflection..{#Meditate}
Yes, Tom is working on a new album according to Rolling Stone Mag .  Looking forward to it.

Petty describes the new album, not yet titled, "as kind of like  Mojo – to a new power. It's not as strict to the blues as that one is. But everything comes from the blues, and we've found something new – a new way to stamp the blues."

The album is also "born the same way as Mojo," he goes on, "where we perform everything together, with very little futzing around with it after it's done. But more than anything else, it's about the songs. Writing a song is such a gift from God. You have to be patient and attentive, and I gotta stay at it a lot. But things turn up, and when they do, it's exciting and makes you want to go back and try it again."

So far, Petty and the Heartbreakers have cut a dozen songs for the new record. "And of those, I hear six that I'm sure about," he says with obvious delight. "There may be more, but I'm definitely sure of those." He laughs again. "If I'm sure about one, that's exciting."

It was this album, rdo, that turned my thoughts around on TP.  I truly enjoy this album and song - I ended up buying it; the only TP album I own.

I hate Tom Petty but this song is cool. Sounds more like Dire Straights to me but good stuff.

I'm with you on this one. TP is more than a one-song-style wonder. This song supports the point. How is this anything like "American Girl"? Or "Free Falling"? It's not. But if you're tone deaf it may be hard to tell the difference.
Shit thought it was bob dylan with a sore throat

Excellent song. Whenever I hear a Tom Petty song it makes me feel like he came from the same beat down Southern town I came from.
