Beautiful
Alone with my enemy
And share a bitter cup
Of poisoning
My countenance
To see his face in mine
And follow every line
Back to my enemy

You are mine
Pennyroyal wine fly
Like an innocent child
That followed every line
Back to my enemy

Beautiful
Falling fast from a state of grace
And trusting there is a light
In darkest place
My dirty knees
Hold the ground till it's done with me
I've come to see that beauty is a thing
That is without grace

You are mine
Pennyroyal wine fly
Like an innocent child
That followed every line
Back to my enemy

Beautiful
At home with my history
And run the scarlet ink
With the tears of mercy
My battle wounds
Lay to rest a treasure box
And thinkin of the scars
As the jewels of my story

You are mine
Pennyroyal wine fly
Like an innocent child
That followed every line
Back to my enemy

Gorgeous. Simple and elegant.
Fab!
What a brilliant chorus.
Great song going to bump it up to 8
This song sounds like it could be 50 years old. Kind of a timeless sound.
Very nice...
Aconite.
Damn, what a downright pretty song.
Would love to hear her version with Jeff Beck of Rollin' and Tumblin'  ... just Godlike

You were lucky to have her as Elbow's opening act! When I saw Elbow some years ago their opening act was someone I don't remember that sang nothing but 'downer' songs. It was so depressing someone in the audience finally yelled out 'Don't you have any happy songs?'.
That sounds like my experience at the previous Elbow show. All down-tempo, dreary stuff. Jesca is cool!

Reminds me a lot of “Blank piece of paper” by Luthea Salom.

love love love this song. "My dirty knees
Hold the ground till it's done with me" - poet, singer and songwriter.
I guess you either love or hate this song. It sounds discordant to me. Sorry. :1
Lovely, this.
Sure does the trick for me. Straight into my bloodstream, like an intravenous drug.
I'm not sure if it's layered vocal tracks, or just a breathy sound, but it's not really working for me... It's better when it goes into harmony, but the unison layered breathy vocal sound is a bit grating to me. Maybe worth a 5...
To my ears this song is at least as good as some of the female Scandinavian singer/ songwriters that are regularly played on RP.

If the rest of the album is as good as this then I wish Jessica Hoop all the best success in the music industry.

You're kidding aren't you?
Love Jesca  Hoop, she lives in the next street to me! Chorlton, Manchester UK. I did submit some Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop to RP but it was rejected.....shame.
Hoop there it is!
this is painful ...................
Jescan Hoop and Sam Beam toured together recently and I read about them coming to Dallas and so I thought I'd buy a ticket to see them and don'cha know while I was reading about them coming to town the Dallas show was already under way at that very moment. Dang, missed it.
Gorgeous - must listen to the rest of the album

Miss you so much, Cynaera...

everybody in my church loves this song...

Got this on psd...wonderful...play this moe
I still think this is ''Kimya Dawson'' maybe they came out of the same egg... ??
Grating. Annoying.  PSD ==>  bye bye.
I had not heard of Jesca when I saw her open for the Eels a year or so back.

I was just mesmerized by her. Not sure why, as she is such a unique performer, but she really seemed familiar to me. Her voice, her lyrics.

She manned her merchandise table after her performance and I got to chat with her and bought some cds and some vinyl.

She made a fan out of me and I hope she continues to make records.
Lovely harmonies
More from Jesca please...
both albums are exquisite
Come on Bill, a bit more action for this cold and windy morning in europe!!
This song - her voice, those mystic lyrics, the simple-yet-complex guitar - hits me right in the muse, much the way the "Runes" Zeppelin album did.  I think I'm going to buy this. I bought this just now.  It's exquisite.  RP, you make it FAR TOO EASY to get carried away with spending money on good music. {#Naughty} {#Mrgreen}
What a sweet little thing this is.

And less accent.  Of course, I like her accent.

This aint Kimya Dawson's sister by any chance ??
Beautiful song, disturbing lyrics. I bought her "Hunting My Dress" album and can't stop listening to it. Highly recommended.

The music and the melody are just gorgeous...  this song is soooo interesting...

I agree - I bumped it to a 9, because those vocals are SO intriguing, and it's almost like there are some subliminal messages being sent. This song entrances me. I might have to buy the CD to see if her other work has a similar effect on me.

Thanks for introducing me to this amazing artist. She works between a wide variety of genres, all of which she does an excellent job with. She reminds me of Regina Spektor, but with more range.
Lovely voice.

I love the song. Can someone explain the lyrics?
What a lovely little bit of strangeness that was.

Listen different.
Okay, wow. These vocals are pretty awesome. I like the haunting lyrics (I mean, who ever uses the word "pennyroyal"?)  This is probably going to end up on my list of music to purchase. Good stuff!

They have about the same level of talent too.
MORE JESCA PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

She has at least a dozen songs that would fit great in the rotation here...

A nice song....but a sway away from the mood of the previous sets.....
Mmmmm - I really like this one. Intricate, pure vocals and harmonies. This and the Jennys... I'm getting back into female vocalists lately, it seems! {#Meditate}
I heart hippie art chicks!

Good call. It sounds a bit like renaissance music, or a madrigal.

She was Tom Waits nanny? She doesn't look quite old enough, but I'll go with it.

Kinda cute, tho.

If you believe Wikipedia, she was born in '76 and was indeed nanny to Tom Waits' children (not to Tom Waits himself, note). And yes, she is kinda cute, as is this song which is rather sweet :o)

Choking up my coffee, bugleboy and wonderunit! {#Arrowd} {#Lol} Thanx!!!

What Mandolin said...

Finally, Jesca Hoop on RP!  Her first album is wonderful.  She's incredible live —- saw her open up for Sinead O'Connor in San Francisco and I was blown away.

In truth, Tom Waits is only 3 years older than Justin Bieber.  His publicists try to suppress knowledge of the fact that he suffers from Richards' Syndrome, a condition wherein the body ages prematurely in response to relentless exposure to recreational pharmaceutical agents.  Being raised by a licentious nanny probably didn't help, either.
A Jesca Hoop song on RP at last! I like this entire album, perhaps better than her new one, Hunting My Dress, which is finally available in the US.

{#Hearteyes} LOVE this whole album! Tom Waits: "Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night."
Where is STINGRAY complaining about "Bill's Army of Girls"?? {#Roflol}
I like the simplicity and complexity of this song.  The vocal is almost childlike, but the guitar is more complicated than it seems. And when the harmonies kick in, it's just magical.  A very good listen!{#Sunny}
I like this.
