My my, hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay
It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.

Out of the blue and into the black
They give you this, but you pay for that
And once you're gone, you can never come back
When you're out of the blue and into the black.

The king is gone but he's not forgotten
This is the story of a Johnny Rotten
It's better to burn out than it is to rust
The king is gone but he's not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

What a beautiful song...
I remember watching the movie in NYC, maybe at the Palladium. The memory is vague. Something about a Devo clip coming first? We were given some strange paper glasses to wear? When Neil got to the line "there's more to the picture than meets the eye" I figured there must be something weird about to happen on the screen, so I put on the glasses. Nope, nothing.

Great isn't it?
GODLIKE!
40+ years on and I still remember the lyrics - that has to be the sign of a great song
That voice....

Everybody knows.
This one always reminds me that Neil is the Godfather of Grunge

unfortunately all too true - HOWEVER - if one has to fade away let this be one of the tracks!!
Neil Young is a real talent, but his voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard (for me). Despite that, I really like this song. It is fantastic.
Despite what he said, here is he, and many of us, fading away

Definitely!

The segue was repeated today...I rather liked it.  As I have said numerous times before, I can't live without Neil Young!
There's more to the picture, than meets the eye.

Living legend this man {#Cool}

Thanks Bill.. thought turning 65 didn't have any songs befitting...  but realizing Neil and your expertise are bringing new meaning to the number. Thanks again for making our Paradise just that much better!!!!

squeal burned out before he started....{#Stop}
Rust never sleeps ... always creeps (all around) ... my car! {#Sunny}
But it is sunny and salty down here, so I do not complain! {#Cheers}

Absolute perfection and an important moment in the history of Rock'n'Roll.  What more could I say?

What does this mean?
this song was burned into my ROM in 1988 when hitching a ride from a trucker from Great Falls to Kalispell, MT - the only tape he played the whole ride (all night on RT. 2) - hated it at first, a true believer after the 9th or 10th repeat

I can't agree with Neil.  If it's a matter of burning out at a young age or fading away in old age, I'll take the latter.  But my life doesn't suck. YMMV.

For sure, but he was probably being ironic.  Still, I think he is expressing a very Nietzschean ideal of art.

His voice is nothing to Annie's but somehow sounds better...
I cannot get any sound for the last 2 days.......wtf?
This is the tune that really turned me on to Neil Young.
Just scored a pair of tickets for my best friend and I to see Neil and Crazy Horse at Red Rocks! To see them jam between slabs of groovy sandstone reaching high into the mauve and periwinkle skies that embrace that peerless place in Space, it'll be as grand as it gets or grander — whoo-hoo!  SEE YOU ON AUG 5!  Can't wait!
Good follow up, I knew Neil in California in the 60's and he was and is everything he writes and performs about. We are fortunate he passed that 27 test but I don't think it was ever an issue. Stephen Stills on the other hand.....
Love the play list tonight. Perfect for the Rainy night here in Playa del Carmen, Mx.

I always wanted to see a scene in "Highlander" where Kurgan was grooving to Neil Young.
Definitely one of my favourite
And a special meaning, when i knew Kurt Cobain wrote part of this song on his death note ( "It's Better to burn out, than to fade away")
It's a great thing Neil passed the "27" exam ....
eric

Saw a PBS special on Neil Young the night. This song (and, of course, Hey Hey, My My) came out of a jam session with Devo.
Change 5 brandnew morning jackets,
2 dinner jackets
and 17 (dead) fleet foxes

against a shadow of NEIL!

Wish I knew Neil or at least seen and heard him in person—then I'm sure I'd rate his songs higher. I think he's a wonderful poet, musician, and human. But his songs from a detached vantage point are just OK for me, mostly due to his presentation.
Is this the story of this guy?
