Isolations, dotted lines
Seas of concrete, wild eyes
Streaking colors, blurred to one
Always moving, blinding sun
Blinding sun
Cold discomfort, safety glass
Seasons turning, dying grass
California, gilded crowns
Mile markers, counting down

Somewhere down, down
Down in the ocean of sound, sound
We'll live in slow-motion
And be free
With doors unlocked and open
Doors unlocked and open

Isolations
Isolations
California, gilded crowns
Idle workers, counting down

Somewhere down, down
Down in the ocean of sound, sound
We'll live in slow-motion
And be free
With doors unlocked and open
Doors unlocked and open

Somewhere down, down
Down in the ocean of sound, sound
We'll live in slow-motion

As there were no recent comments, thought I'd drop in to say I like this song and am glad it's on the playlist.

Been a DCFC fan for years after first reading about them in Esquire magazine of all places.  That night I bought most of their albums from Amazon

They'll all be really confused if they come across all of our RP listen histories
This album has a particular melancholy-yet-hopeful vibe; while I think you have to be in the right mindset to enjoy it to its fullest from start to finish, it's definitely worth letting it wash over you. Probably the best way to enjoy this album - it also works particularly well as an accompaniment on long car journeys.

Coincidentally when this LP came out I gifted a copy to a sibling who later said it got them through a challenging time in their life, with some very relevant meaning in this song and others like You Are a Tourist.

Very well stated!  If you don't like it, hit the "skip button". ...problem solved!

Nice song but intro looks a lot like 'Hallo Gallo' by Neu!

Lyrics
That night Cutie called a cab, uh huh huh (Baby, don't do it)
She left her East Side room so drab, uh huh huh
(Baby, don't do it)
She went out on the town
Knowin' it would make her lover frown
(Death-cab for Cutie)
(Death-cab for Cutie)
Someone's gonna make you pay your fare

The cab was racin' through the night, mm mm mm
(Baby, don't do it)
His eyes in the mirror, keepin' Cutie in sight, uh huh huh
(Baby, don't do it)
When he saw Cutie, it gave him a thrill
Don't you know, baby curves can kill
(Death-cab for Cutie)
(Death-cab for Cutie)
Someone's gonna make you pay your fare

Cutie, don't you play with fate
Don't leave your lover alone
If you go out on this date
His heart will turn to stone

Bad girl, Cutie, what have you done, uh huh huh
(Baby, don't do it)
Slippin' slidin' down-a Highway 31, mm mm mm
(Baby, don't do it)
The traffic lights changed from green to red
They tried to stop but they both wound up dead
(Death-cab for Cutie)
(Death-cab for Cutie)

I always wondered where their name came from
Death Cab were only ever peripherally on my radar, and mainly because I really liked a few Postal Service tracks back in't day. But I've ranked every tune of theirs that I've heard on RP at least 7. Many thanks to Bill for expanding my repertoire

Yes if you would't know you might hear Klaus Dinger on drums. Great.

I wasn't paying attention when Bill announced this track just now, but it sounded like he said 'DeathCamp for Cutie' - Yes, that's f'ed up in so many ways, but that's what I heard, so sue me

me too... nice, fat, dry mix (with FLAC)
This has been influenced a bit by German bands 'Mother Sky' by Can or Hallogallo' by Neu.. to me anyway
HUGE DCFC fan!!
Shame they didn't turn the drum machine off once in a while.
I think it was the Buffalo Beast (RIP) that described Death Cab for Cutie best: every song is the part of normal songs that crescendos up to the high point, without ever actually getting there. Just a frustrating, repetitive listening experience.
It has a San Fransisco 1966 feel to it

Good tune!!
Well constructed & thought out...very slick production. #
Excellent mix, as always -- really appreciating the fine Mother's Day soundtrack!
Perfect for the pandemic.
Sounds better ever time.

Still sounds NEU! after all these years.
Upped my rating from 8 to 9.  Love the heavy rhythm section!  Bass is tipped towards treble pickup and might even have round-wound strings ... nice.

As did your comment I'm sure.
I've not heard this track before. It made my ears prick up as I thought the start sounded like a cover of hallogallo by neu ! I will have to make time to check out more of their back catalogue though.

This band got their name from a song by the wonderful Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band featuring Viv Stanshall. Check them out.
I love this song. Fun to drum to. Constant beat with different melodies.
My lad and I saw them here last week and thoroughly enjoyed the show.  Vicious bass which shook the building.  Glad to hear this track too, as he thinks Codes and Keys was their high point.
Really like this band. Another of my RP discoveries.

Actually sounds like the Cure if they could play. And sing.
Hey, struck by something from YouTube.... Does RP play machine pop? DCC followed by TWOD. They sound the same to me. They "sound" comfortable to me, but....  Check it out.

"The Truth Why Modern Music Is Awful" definitely makes sense to me.

Totally agree. The last part of the song, with its unyielding and repetitive drums, is lazy as anything. No variety in it and as a result I have got to the stage where I now find it very tedious to listen to. Please retire it from the playlist, at least for a while!

I logged in to say that the very beginning of this track, the part with the cool drums, reminds me of the song "I Looked at You" from The Doors' debut album The Doors.  Odd that DCfC has "Doors" in this song's title.

And like others have said, I feel that this song starts off great and then gets less great as it goes on.  I find myself liking it less each time I hear it.

LONG LIVE RP!!

*I've evened out my rating at an 8, the groove is good on this one at least

LLRP*

The production of the drums on this track is excellent. Really feel them with a good stereo.
Forget, over and over, how much I like this song.
to be followed by Jimi Hendrix "1983,...A Merman I Should Turn To Be"?

Pat. That's an excellent word for it.

Can't wait for them to play at Best Kept Secret this summer!

In a Southern vernacular, "open" door means that it "can" be opened.  "I left the door open for you" means you can open it when you get there; it's not locked. Not literally swung open. This is in the same vein of "knock knock" then "come on in, the door's open."
 Euskadita wrote:

It's not likely; Kashmir is a pretty obscure band, probably not widely known outside of Northern Europe and especially unknown to most Americans, and there are hundreds of other songs which sound similar.
This song is really growing on me. Love it. Thanks for playing it RP.

Surely this guys never heard this song by Kashmir.

The doors are open than go away

Yes, the doors can be unlocked but not opened. According to the title, these particular doors are unlocked, and also opened. Where is the confusion?

The song let me recall a band of my youth : "Can" (former "The Can"). They made somekind of psychedelic krautrock - allthough they denied to be called a "rockband". I once heard and saw them live in concert at "Fabrik" in Hamburg here in Germany in the mid 70ies - it was great! I looked around at iTunes and astoundingly found only four tracks on samplers. But via wikipedia, I found their website: "spoonrecords.com"
They had a great hit called "Spoon", which was a soundtrack for a tv-film "Das Messer" in three parts (from the story "the knife" by Francis Durbridge). When it ran on tv, it made the streets empty :-)) That was, when there where only three tv-channels in Germany.
{#Bananajam}rocking out! {#Drummer}

The "doors unlocked and open" line always makes me think of the recorded message on the trains at the Atlanta airport.
