In the dark of grave yard chatter
In the light of freedoms call
In the heat of any matter
We travel as equals or not at all

Bloom disgust and class divide
I saw it written on the wall
The only way we can survive
We travel as equals or not at all

You can't be in greater comfort
As my pain prevents your fall
The truth will come and tell us brother
We travel as equals or not at all

And when we get to where we're going
Past the divide past the stall
Past the wind that's always blowing
Travel as equals or not at all

In your way, you found a way free
In your way, you found a way, follow me
Give it up, give it up
Give it up to your destiny
In your way, you found a way free

And you might have a greater income
Or you might be dumb and dull
But either way I won't leave you
Travel as equals or not at all

So help me too in my slumber
If I'm blind in madness hall
If I'm deaf amongst the thunder
Travel as equals or not at all

Lift the way forget the ransom
Free the chain and kick the ball
Let our love take us higher
Travel as equals or not at all

And down the road and through the sky
And on the tracks, hear the gull
Fly above us, without worry
Travel as equals or not at all

I hope your road takes you homeward
And may you always outrun the law
If I'm with you we will always
Travel as equals or not at all

Yes if I'm with you we will always
Travel as equals or not at all
Yes if I'm with you we will always
Travel as equals or not at all

In your way, you found a way free
In your way, you found a way, follow me
Give it up, give it up
Give it up to your destiny
In your way, you found a way free

In the dark of grave yard chatter
In the light of freedoms call
In the heat of any matter
We travel as equals or not at all

Bloom disgust and class divide
I saw it written on the wall
The only way we can survive
We travel as equals or not at all

The only way we can survive
We travel as equals or not at all
The only way we can survive
We travel as equals or not at all
Rob from always on the run is so bad and copy paste is a sin
In your way, you found a way free
In your way, you found a way, follow me
Give it up, give it up
Give it up to your destiny
In your way, you found a way free
In your way, you found a way free
In your way, you found a way free

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but it's staggering and very depressing how many nutters there are in the World.

See, I make snarky comments on Neil Young and Bob Dylan songs and everyone jumps down my throat. The level of sarcasm here, on a song I actually have on an almost-infinite loop, is WAY higher than what gets backlash on other songs. It takes a village, people.

This has really grown on me, that by itself doesn't mean anything to anyone else, but I'm just saying that the more I hear this the more I like it. Bumped 7 > 8

Monotonous is the kindest thing I can say about this one.
Cringeworthy.

weird . . . circles in circles. i swear i heard this just a few plays ago. i really like it though. men take heed.
Option C: we just be equals and stay at home, too.  I like that idea if it means I can stop hearing you sing.
I like the music and the background vocals fine, but the repetitive droning lead vocals make this song worse, not better.
Never heard this tune but DOWN BY LAW with such lyrics... will have to investigate more about who/what/why he is.  Thanks RP.

If that was the case, it would not still be in rotation.  Evidence suggests otherwise.  Nice to my ears.

I'm more generous, it's a bit hooky so a sort of 3-ish...enjoyable randomly way. As Farthing's cat said...I enjoy his voice

Thought I'd give silence a listen while this one played. Turns out it's not that bad!

Edit 23-01-2017: After a peek at the lyrics (which aren't horrible), I noticed something awry I've referenced elsewhere on the RP site (see: oops-see!).

This can't be the worst song on RP, can it?

Nah, there are many which are far worse.  Here's one.
Very Dylan like lyrics. I for one would rather listen to this rather than ANY Smiths song, unless they did an instrumental album.
Interesting reading the opinions here. I like the song-heard him play this live at Todos Santos Music Festival in January 2016. I was glad I'd heard first on RP. Peter Buck really likes him.

Funny that someone commented it reminded  them of "People Who Died"; the Drive By Truckers" covered that at the festival. Is it that interesting musicians and listeners think alike, or just a sign of the times...?
Too much like Rap for my taste... and I do not like rap.....

Yes I'll second that, I ws away from my computer in another room and thought it was my noisy neighbours playing their Rap-Crap again, with the endless Thump-Thump-Thump but I was pleased to discover it was on RP as I could turn it off.

I want this song to douse itself in gasoline and light a match.

This is kind of intriguing. It seems like NA listeners rate this lower than European listeners.

Is this
a) true?
b) if so why?

Sounds to me like a lot of US listeners think it is contrived.
To me it doesn't sound contrived at all, but I'm not American and maybe I'm missing the cultural nuances?

I actually quite like it.

Not crazy about this particular song and I don't know the artist, but I have to think he has some Townes Van Zandt in his CD collection.

I do not understand the negative comments.  The lyrics are exceptional; the music is very good; the delivery reminds me of Richard Hell circa Blank Generation, but with a more positive and deeper message.
I wanted to give this a 1.  But then anything that compels me to stop what i'm doing and read the comments and lyrics deserves more consideration.  I love all the listeners (and opinions!!) almost as much as this station.  Thanks Bill, for the gift of pause.
This can't be the worst song on RP, can it?
Jeez, looks like this guy needs a bit of support. I've just tuned in on a wet Monday morning in Manchester at the start of a shift and this song gave me a serious lift. Suppose Manchester is the home of cheerfully depressing music so maybe it fits just fine with that!

i thought this sounded ok to me, suprised at the dislike in the comments on this one. whats there to 'hate'?
does remind me a bit, at the beginning, of 'Bleed it Out' - Linkin Park - is that what people don't like?

This grouping of songs does not reflect Bill's usual mastery of tune, lyrics, tempo and theme.  This time has been devoted to also-rans, rejects, iffys and the dreaded sucko-barfo.  Sorry  to be so negative.

It's a good song. I heard it the other night in a club in the city in which I live where people who inhabit the club spill $15 glasses of vodka over each other, while the driver waiting for them outside until 3 a.m. is lucky if he gets paid that in a day (and his day is 20 hours, folks). If we travel as equals, it is not on the material plane of existence on which we are travelling. Because on the material plane we don't travel as equals, and the vast majority of us don't travel "at all" but aren't satisfied with that outcome.

Still, it's a great song. Life the way we live it is the bastard here, not Joseph Arthur. He's just a poser, but that's not unusual and in my view it's cool — like I said, I like the song.

I like the song ... and I like this comment even more. Reminds me of my Wall Street gig.

Awesome message in this song.
Think this is monotonous? Try Rick Stirfry (the CBC announcer} aka Buck.65's version.
He's done better - ought to stay off the soapbox.

Dig what your sayin. I only complain when U2 hits the airwaves.
Well, as always, I love that RP plays all kinds of music, regardless of popularity.
This one does come off as affected and self-aware, but the song does improve as it progresses past the spoken word vocals into the instrumental finish. Still, it's only a 5 or 6, IMO.

Rocket science is way over rated.
In 2012 is not quite good idea to use style from 1985 :)
I'll take this over that War on Drugs dross that gets played so much.

Here's a thought — and I'm just spitballing here — we could play those good songs instead of this one.

(By the way, I'm not really advocating Bill pull this from the lineup. I like that he challenges my sensibilities and forces me to experience new things. It's his playlist, and he can / should do what he sees fit. But yeah, this one is pretty much unredeemable for me. )

Dreadful.
Do I like this tune?
Well, NOT AT ALL!

Wins the prize for the most platitudes in a silly pop song. Pure pap.

I take comfort knowing that someone else is as annoyed by something I like as I am by this song.
Sounds to me like it came from Rodriguez's "Sugar Man".

Ooh, I dunno - the William Shatner covers/parodies of popular songs (such as Pulp's Common People) with lots of spoken words are pretty popular on here. The spoken, rather than sung, word goes back rather a long way so I don't think it's an age thing.

This could be much better if he just removed the chorus "travel as equals..." bit.  I like the other parts well enough...a "5"
