When I think of you in the city,
The sight of you among the sites.
I get this sudden sinking feeling,
Of a man about to fly.
Never kept me up before,
Now I've been awake for days.
I can't fight it anymore,
I'm going through an awkward phase.
I am secretly in love with,
Everyone that I grew up with.
Do my crying underwater,
I can't get down any farther.
All my drowning friends can see,
Now there is no running from it.
It's become the crux of me,
I wish that I could rise above it.

But I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.

Passing buzzards in the sky,
Alligators in the sewers.
I don't even wonder why,
Hide among the under views.
Huddle with them all night long,
The worried talk to god goes on.
I sincerely tried to love it,
Wish that I could rise above it.

But I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.

Can I stay here? I can sleep
On the floor
Paint the blood and hang the palms,
On the door.
Do not think I'm going places anymore,
Wanna see the sun come up above New York.
Oh, everyday I start so great,
Then the sunlight dims.
Less I've learned,
The more I see the pythons and the limbs.
Do not know what's wrong with me,
Sours in the cup.
When I walk into a room,
I do not light it up.
Fuck.

So I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.
I stay down,
With my demons.

Had to downgrade to a 6 so it doesn't come in my favorites. The slideshow was scaring the kids.

No, Matt Berninger is no Leonard Cohen. Fortunately.
A solid, solid 1 with a bullet!  In my head.
This band kills me,  can't get to PSD quick enough, that monotonic dreary depressing sound. Not why I listen to music.
Is this what Goths and Emos listen to?

Me, too, my friend. I feel so much more than I ever had. It's almost overwhelming.

The National make my heart ache, in a good-ish way
gawd this band is horrible.

My sentiments exactly ... that and what the other bloke said about using The National play time as good for using the toilet.
I'm sure the college kids love these guys and all their soul searching and darkness.  But by the time one has kids actually in college, those attributes don't work as well...not bad, but I'm too grey to get sucked into their vortex of indulgence...

next...

Not that anyone asked my opinion :)... but to all the youngsters out there: definitely maintain relationships with the peeps you're growing up with.

Yeah - the 7/8 time is smooth in this tune, not clunky-sounding like it can be sometimes.

It depends what alternative pleasures their lives offer...
Is this like The Crash Test Dummies?

Speaking for yourself, of course. I personally welcome the relief from the tenors and altos who are pervasive in recorded music. I remain interested.

I can relate
so boring, Hey the National, try meth before making music
This band is brilliant.  Anybody who has felt deeply about anything can relate to this true testament to pain and haunting.
Bleck.
When I walk into a room,
I do not light it up.
Fuck.

I think that's just good song writing
 still

I think the singer has a bade case of the "mumbles".

Forgot to mention, I quite like it.
Bit of a penchant for Baritone voices after a plethora of falsetto,  boy soprano and unmelodic gaspings.
Somebody has a complete collection of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. . . .
I love this band.

You've got shares in this radio? Keep it to yourself and let me listen to my daily "National" quietly. Ahhhhh....it's so good

I can't remember the melody: there's too much notes in it... {#Ask}
Excellent album full of thoughtful insight concerning relationships.
Hmm, first time...is there more?
I feel sad now.
Forgettable.
Like the band & the song.

That's what I say about AC/DC.
Always partial to a pop song in an odd time signature... especially 7. (From All You Need Is Love to Solsbury Hill and far, far beyond.)
Scary good writing.
I really like this band, but the ode to self-deprecation in the lyrics gets a little tired.
Love The National!!!
The best thing about The National is, it's a great opportunity to get away from the computer and use the restroom or go for a walk.
Saw these boys in Bend a couple weeks ago, just before Sasquatch.  They were great!  Of course, they always are.
Fire And Rain ---> Demons

I get it, Bill. Nicely done.
is she looking at me through the reflection in that mirror?  freaky
this band has only one song, they keep renaming it and putting it on different albums. it's a terrible song to boot.
This reminds me, I need to buy tickets today for their Bend concert in a couple months.
are we sure this is not just a demo of THE LAST TIME? one or the other, but not the same song twice on the same album, please...

Boring is the insistence by some that every artist enunciate perfectly.

I was there too and it was an amazing show. Fortunately, it was mostly dry while they were playing, but I thought the gentle rain at the end only added to the magic, when everyone was singing along to Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks with the rain shimmering in the stage lights. One of the best shows I've been to.

These boys put on an amazing show and I just can't get enough of The National. Thanks Bill for playing them as much as you do. It's because of RP that I've grown to appreciate this great band.
This guy is the Eeyore of the music world.

Right on time!
Bitchen photographs on the slide show for this song!{#Twisted}
love that relentless drumming

The female backup singer is a pretty good mumbler also.

They should change the name of the band from the National to the Mumblers.

Hahaha....your comments about starting a band cracked me up.

I think the time they played with Bob Weir, was some of their finest stuff.

Hey, with your singing and my drumming, we should make a band.
He just went overboard with his confessional poetry. Previous songs were appealing, alright, but now I just feel sorry for the guy.

Can't wait till he starts singing about his incontinence or how he doesn't like the color of his pills...
 oldsaxon wrote:

That is exactly what drew me to this band. Vocals and lyrics are the last thing I listen to when I hear music.
This album is in rotation now on my favorite college radio station.  Fortunately albums usually only stay in rotation for about a month so I just gotta wait it out and hope that I am lucky enough to miss most of the plays.{#Lol} Their days are numbered for sheer blandness once they lose the hipster coolness tag the music is not interesting enough to sustain them for the long haul.  But then again, the masses usually have pretty poor taste in music so who knows maybe they will break the mainstream and can tour with Taylor Swift or something.
mumble. mumble mumble
I'm liking this upon first listen. Like many tunes that seem to take time to warm to...this has longevity.
Love the way this builds.  Getting very fond of this band.

I did my share of listens. Nothing is growing. Never thought I would be tempted to hit the PSD-button during a National-song, but I am.
