When you catch the light you look like your mother
It crushes me some, just right from the side
When you catch the light, there's a flash of wild creatures
For the stone age of the preachers
And the husbands and the wives

When you catch the light the flood changes direction
And darkens the lens that projects by the skies
As you fly alongside you'll discover my weakness
I'm not fighting for your freedom
I am fighting to be wise

Hey little girl, would you like to be the king's pet or the king?
I'd choose odorless and invisible, but otherwise, I would choose the king
Even though it sounds the loneliest
And my brother's hands would poison me

Hey little girl, would you like to be the king's pet or the king?
I'd choose odorless and invisible, but otherwise, I'd choose the king
Even though it sounds the loneliest
There's no mother's hands to quiet me

In listening to the music of this song, I was struck that this seems pretty mellow for Neko. I then read the lyrics and found she hasn't lost her edge after all!
I can't help but think of a Mercury Cougar when I hear/see Neko..

I think I appreciate Case's unique talent and artistry more than I like her actual music - if that makes any sense.

That makes perfect sense and I would put myself in that same category regarding her music; I like some of her efforts but as I am extremely "twang averse" some of it is simply not accessible to me...
I think that I should have liked to hear Neko do some work with Gordon Lightfoot (among many, many others).

You feel more hip to her vision and her promise than currently entertained by her? That is not a bad thing; it encourages the performer and sells future albums to her optimistic followers. Like being a "patron" of her art...? Me too.

Forget his name but the older guy that played guitar, pedal steel and of all things, a trombone - he was awesome.
That would most likely be Jon Rauhouse.  An astounding player, I do agree.
yawn. not neko case again? double yawn.

Saw here a week ago at the Vogue in Broad Ripple. It was fun. I'm an avid Neko fan and the show did not disappoint.

The bass player looked like someone from Duck Dynasty. He played the stand up bass a good bit, which I think is cool.

Also enjoyed seeing the backup singer. She does very well.

On a side note, security was making a HUGE point about no one being allowed to take any pictures or videos. They made it clear that you would be booted out immediately if you used a phone or camera. It was bit heavy handed.  Ironically, Neko's hair and outfit were pretty bad. Black tights that had all the leg and hip bones in white with some ratty shirt. He hair looked like an outlet bit her.

Still love the Neko tho. It was great being that close. I think she smiled at me.

If you do try and tape her show you better hope Security catches you before Neko does!

She should not have gone down on Frosty: he is supposed to be Parson Brown anyway.

This just into the RP Newsroom: Neko lost a small portion of her nose to frostbite earlier this month.

You are now being returned to your regularly scheduled programming.

I saw her at a smallish venue about a year ago and was disappointered to find I was singularly unimpressed.
I desperately did not want to feel this way about her, but I did. She is much more engaging and original-sounding on cuts
when you hear her in a well-produced recording.
Nice

Interesting question: Would you choose to be the king's pet, or the king?

 To quote from an old Mel Brooks movie History of the World Part 1....."It's GOOD to be (the) king!"  {#Yes}

I loved Neko's first few albums but thought her last three (Middle Cyclone, Fox Confessor and Tigers) were just average.  From what I've heard of this latest one, though, it sounds like she's back on track to making unbelievably beautiful and meaningful music.
{#Bananapiano} Magnificent album - v nice song

I thought I was in love with a woman once....and then I heard Neko Case......
Oh how I love you. Let me count the ways.
Great record from my indie rock crush!

Neko's at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival in January. She's on a bill with Iron and Wine and Justin Townes Earle among others.

Sounds like a pretty damn good night!

You'll have a great time.  I saw the tour a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it.  Pics from that night:

I'm seeing her tonight!!!!
Haunting and melodic. The way I LOVE my tunes...thank you NC.
Great concert the other night. After several encores and leaving the stage the final time, they noticed the harvest moon rising behind the stage. They came back and sang I Wish I Was the Moon.

absolutely marvelous...  love this song...
Oh, wow - Neko covers Madonna of the Wasps on a bonus track on this album - gotta' go listen to that...

Seeing her at the local amphitheater in about 2 hours!  This is a nice tune up.  8
Some of her stuff takes a while to grow on me, but once it does it sinks in very deep. I liked this one right away. Going to see her in Denver this week!
New Neko. Nice.  {#Cheers}
An outstanding cut from one of the best albums of the year.
