The first to put a simple truth in words
Binds the world in a feeling all familiar
'Cause everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Antenna up and out into New York
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
And oh, my giddy aunt New York can talk
It's a modern Rome and folk are nice to Yoko

Every bone of rivet steel, each corner stone and angle
Jenga jut and rusted water tower, pillar, post and sign
Every painted line and battered ladder building in this town
Sings a life of proud endeavour and the best that man can be

Me, I see a city and I hear a million voices
Planning, drilling, welding, carrying their fingers to the nub
Reaching down into the ground, stretching up into the sky
Why?
Because they can, they did and do so you and I could live together

Oh my god New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my god New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my god New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The desire in the patchwork symphony
The desire like a distant storm
For love, did it come from me?
'Cause it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The desire in the patchwork symphony
The desire like a distant storm
For love, did it come from me?
'Cause it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The way the day begins
Decides the shade of everything
But the way it ends depends on if you're home
For every soul, a pillow and a window, please
In the modern Rome, where folk are nice to Yoko

Few bands produce songs with complex meaningful and relatable lyrics. Elbow is up there with the best of those that do.
A lot of great comments! I appreciate this song so much more. Still only a 3.
Guy Garvey is a stand up diamond geezer.
This song is just sublime.  And so captures what Manhattan feels like to me.
Getting a slight Brian Wilson vibe
wonderful tune, album, band
Just saw Elbow last night here in Dublin with Jesca Hoop support , two years late but still magnificent , brilliant band .......
This is just amazing

speaking as a native New Yorker who has lived in two of the boroughs, went to college there, worked there and still does....YES, PLEASE!!
I've had this at a 7 rating for a long time, but never until today did I pay any attention to the lyrics. I lived/worked in NYC for a few years, and developed a love-hate relationship with it. But as time goes by, it's like most relationships—you remember more of the good, and look back wistfully. I love this ode to the city. And since I'm currently watching the Beatles "Get Back" documentary, I'm chuckling at "folk are nice to Yoko."
Good Tune!
Somehow I have never heard this before, and its wonderful! Thanks, RP.
really like this album . My daughter introduced me to elbo and im glad she did. Saw them on this to in NY and needless to say this song was a big hit at the show.
Composition throughout this overlapped track - if simply, and complexly appreciated, must tend it a 20/10!!!
Such a great song.

True, but the plodding pace is very similar.
Brilliant observations of every New Yorker - hence - and tragically, there lies Donald Trump in all his complete lack of glory !!!!! Infinity / 10 for the sheer guts of standing up to modern gibberish sales talk of busted up NYC
Sorry, but i can't stand this kind of voice, like Peter Gabriel,
Ans this way to do a sermon with a song...
amazing tune live, great album

Thanks. Fixed now.

Oh good.  There's a difference.

The piano dips and rises like the NYC skyline. Elbow has said that was intentional. Cool!
That's right.

Everybody owns the great's ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

I have at least one great idea today. Sing it up, Elbow.
haven't heard this for a while.. great song.

Simplicity is beautiful
I like Elbow, but if i wasn't looking, I would swear this is Peter Gabriel.
One of the best anthems about my (not so) humble NYC. Captures the optimism, drive, gall, and chutzpah of this great city.

"Sings a life of proud endeavour and the best that man can be"

Dang, but what a wonderful place to live that even the English sing such praises. Gotta love New York, furshur.

Peter Gabriel rip off!

That snare
It's the modern road where folk are nice to Yoko

Guy picks up the cell phone : "Hi Pete! How's it goin'?"
Peter Gabriel: "Hey, Guy! I'm well, working on some new things, couple of shows, 'n stuff, you know. Listen ... something's come up for me next week and I won't be able to do vocals for one of my tracks. We're a bit tight on a schedule, so I thought if you could help me and step in for a day or two?"
Guy: "We'll you know I owe you one for the last time. Send me the words and the ghost tracks and I'll see what I can do."
Peter: "Great, I'll send it right away! Cheers!"
Guy:
"Alright. See you soon! Bye-bye."

Hey Fred, after 7 years of commenting I finally disagree with one of your reviews (so cue the End of The World, comets, fireballs and the Labour Party having a usable economic policy).

I see what you mean and in some ways could be soporific, but for me it isn't, it holds my attention with the slow build up..

Hey, David, I have to agree with you. This is obviously a question of taste, and who knows what governs that? This group fills me with happiness whenever I hear them. And they do not bore me at all.

Elbow are a bit like Whispering Bob Harris: great on an early-morning music show for night owls and insomniacs. I've great respect for them as a band (and, indeed, for their adventures in brewing), but their songs could be used as anaesthetic in minor heart surgery {#Sleep}

A truly great album overall.
Very beautiful.

Been trying to find the right words to express how I feel about Elbow but you just did it for me.

Another word i might use: soporific... Also, sophomoric.

No, this was playing when I left last night. Surely it wouldn't play twice in less than 18 hours?

Liking it, but they're gonna struggle to beat the anthemic 'One Day Like This'
Saw them about a month ago in Oakland.
Best moment, Guy walking individually to each band member: "Pete...I'm having a lovely time." "Mark...I'm having a lovely time."

Looked like they were recording it, which is great.

What an experience - uncompromised affection, camaraderie.
And the wonderful heartbreak of being in love - as we all sang "one day like this a year would see me right..."

And just because we all compare him to Peter G. - well, who cares.  Peter is great.  But these guys are great too!

Funny - I don't particularly like Peter Gabriel, who Elbow is frequently compared, but I really like Elbow. I do see the similarity though, maybe it's the sound in the vocals. Elbow seems more genuine somehow? Funny how subtle things can make such a big difference in what people like...

Good thing we have lots to choose from. Thanks Bill for introducing me to so much music I would not have otherwise known! Elbow, Doves, Younger Brother, Porcupine Tree, etc.

Hate the snare sound on this. {#Razz}  Stands out like a sore thumb and really doesn't fit the song.
Must be a generation thing. My first thought was of Roy Orbison

I believe you have hit on the one thing that this guy has been trying for his entire career.
Caught their show in Oakland on 5/27. They were great, of course.

I love New York, especially the tall buildings, and the incredibly beautiful, breathtaking skyline!  I love skyscrapers, and this song makes me think of them.  Freedom Tower is so great.
Excellent album overall, perhaps their best IMHO.  Been listening to it closely the past few days, impressive - musically coherent and compelling, lyrical strong, and a wonderful overall "vibe" runs through the whole work.

Ok, I've listened to it a bunch and I'm getting into it. It is good - looking forward to seing them at the 9:30 club!
These guys should be big, but it's to my benefit -I get to see them in a small venue!

Truth be told, I didn't usually think much of a new Beatles album when they came out because they challenged by being different (they always won me over, however).  Maybe Elbow will win me over on this one.
Definitely designed by some music consumer focus group.
Hang on, bands are only supposed to produce 1 or 2 good albums. What the hell kind of deal did Elbow pull?
I just found out that they are going to be playing here in Vancouver in May, but it's already sold out. I wasn't fast enough.
Lovely... also very happy to see the overwhelming number of positive comments. I love RP
