There's no time to explain
I'm leaving on the last train
And heading out in grand style
Thinking I might be awhile

I'm looking out for the pearl
The one who'll come to rule the world

She's nineteen in blue jeans
Don't even know what love may mean
She's trying hard to get stoned
Her mind is coming undone

I'm looking out for the pearl
The one who'll come to rule the world
I'm looking out for the pearl

Do tell how it all ends
Where the road forks and where the road bends
So heartsick I can hardly speak
This road will be the death of me

I'm looking out for the pearl
The one who'll come to rule the world
I'm looking out for the pearl

Try to keep real calm, try not to shake my drinking arm
Try to keep real calm, try not to shake my drinking arm...

John Steinbeck's The Pearl remains a timely, haunting parable (I read my copy about every five years). Brian Eno & Harold Budd's LP The Pearl remains a timely, haunting ambient masterpiece and is the musical equivalent to the final line in Steinbeck's book.  You must seek it out if you've never heard it.

Ok Wolford, thanks for the tip, I love Brian Eno too so will seek out that LP.

Was just thinking that. come to see the members.

Error indeed.

Wash your ears please.
Love it.
Considering what they paid for the cover, photo-shopping the burning house, it would've been far more fun actually burning the house - and The Veils would've maintained some credibility.
Channeling 'Gloria' - well done, no complaints. Cheers.
One of the best choruses ever (outro)

Nice album cover!

Finn Andrews stands on his own. DB and Bono are from another bands, not to mention PJ Harvey.
This song (in the verse) suddenly reminds me of Two Silver Trees by Calexico.  I think it was the piano that made me think of it.
Yet another RP first for me.  Thank you!
Thanks Wolford,  I am doing just as you say - listening on YouTube then I will buy the remastered version on CD if I can source it.

Everyone STOP pigeonholing artists. It is what it is...compare if you will.
Finn Andrews is the son of Barry Andrews (ex XTC) from Shriekback.
Don't like the "Bono" vocal so much, but I love the arrangement, the slow build up on a simple groove.

I just had a flashback to a book on the reading list in High School called "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck and was about the infant child of a pearl diver that was stung by a scorpion and the father had to find a way to pay for a doctor.

It was a parable about life in 1940's USA and maybe still true today?

Anyway for a surburban boy living in the UK with a free National Health Service and reading this story it had a profound effect on me.

I know it is nothing about this song - just thought my memory might be something else readers of a similar age would relate to.

Bono / Patti Smith love child.
This was a cool, edgy song. Almost thinking it was gonna get to some kinda Shins' signature level of prophetic-dark-semi-goth stuff. Then they blew it with the Let's Cop Some Talking Heads Lite ender yammering thing. *meh*

HS Class of 95 - and I FOR SURE remember reading "The Pearl" - I don't remember it that well other than the scorpion bite part.  Steinbeck was great at the parable about US life stories.  What was called American Lit vs. English Lit.

I spent a fair bit of time in hospital as a kid, but just treated it as an inconvenience.  I didn't appreciate the gift that is our NHS.  My wife is a nurse now and it astonishes me that we can have such a wonderful profession, unthanked, for £10 per hour.  A bargain, I'd say.
Sounds like a U2 song.
nice song !
excellent 8 for now 9 maybe later

What kind of house doesn't have a lane, a footpath, or a driveway?
One suitable for burning?

"Suicide Is Painless" ??  I don't hear that....but I do hear a strong Bono/U2 influence - which isn't a bad thing in this case

AND...words to live by....."Try to keep real calm, try not to shake my drinking arm"

            Dear, that's the beginning.
You'd get it if better when time is an issue.

Past midnight in Germany, need to go to sleep but don't want to stop to listen to this great mixture of highly enjoyable music ....
These ears thoroughly enjoy this album.

Whoah, this is a very cool& catchy song; the vocals are strong, the guitars, bass and drums are amazing. Glad to hear something new!
I definitely hear David Byrne at the end.
Cool! Nice hooks.

Head of Rough Trade Records, Geoff Travis, has referred to Finn as "a young but maturing real artist in the vein of Nick Cave and David Bowie". So with David Byrne and Patti Smith thrown in, looks like he's got a lot of respectable musical territory covered.

Nope, Byrne wears his underwear much tighter
Gene (Still) Loves Jezebel?  Cool 80's drumbeats!

I was thinking...the imaginary son of David and Patti Smith.
Yuk - for a second or ten I thought it was U2.  What a relief. Still gonna PSD though

Familiar vocals not sure though

Indeed, I believe he is. I will see your 6 with a 7. Nice.
Is it just me, or is Bill rolling out an extraordinary amount of new cool music this week?
