Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog,
Where no one notices the contrast of white on white,
And in between the moon and you, angels get a better view,
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right.
Well I walk in the air between the rain,
Through myself and back again, where? I don't know,
Maria says she's dying, through the door I hear her crying,
Why? I don't know.
Round here, we always stand up straight,
Round here, something radiates.
Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand,
She said she'd like to meet a boy who looks like Elvis,
And she walked along the edge of where the ocean meets the land,
Just like she's walking on a wire in the circus,
She parks her car outside of my house and takes her clothes off,
Says she's close to understanding Jesus,
And she knows she's more than just a little misunderstood,
She has trouble acting normal when she's nervous.
Round here, we're carving out our names,
Round here, we all look the same,
Round here, we talk just like lions,
But we sacrifice like lambs,
Round here, she's slipping though my hands.
Oh, sleeping children better run like the wind,
Out of the lightning dream,
Mama's little baby better get herself in,
Out of the lightning.
She says, it's only in my head,
She says, shhh, I know, it's only in my head,
But the girl on the car in the parking lot,
Says, man, you should try to take a shot,
Can't you see my walls are crumbling?
Then she looks up at the building,
Says she's thinking of jumping,
She says she's tired of life,
She must be tired of something.
Round here, she's always on my mind,
Round here, hey man, I got lots of time,
Round here, we're never sent to bed early,
And nobody makes us wait,
Round here, we stay up very, very, very, very late.
I... I can't see nothing, nothing, round here,
Oh, you catch me if I'm falling,
You catch me if I'm falling,
You catch me 'cause I'm falling down on you,
I said I'm under the gun, round here,
Oh man, I said I'm under the gun, round here,
And I can't see nothing, nothing, round here.
Where no one notices the contrast of white on white,
And in between the moon and you, angels get a better view,

Counting Crows: the whines are just unbearable. Gave it a fiver.
Funny how some bands take you back to place and time. Nothing against Counting Crows at all, but it wasn't a band I was particularly into in the early 90s while going to college in Montreal. I remember however how my friend Pat would drive around in his dad's Toyota and blare CC songs ad nauseam. Now hearing this, it reminds me that we drifted apart after college when friends can often go their different and separate ways and that I should reach out to him after probably 20+ years.
Also funny how after listening to an incredibly diverse selection of music on RP that I find myself turning up Counting Crows because I appreciate them more today than back then. Another RP time warp I got sucked into that caused 5 completely unproductive minutes!

An amazing band and an incredible album. So many classics. Thank you RP!

There are only a few songs that build this well from beginning to end. I'd volunteer that this song does it better than Stairway to heaven.

This album was recommended to me by my nephew a few years ago. I asked him what he thought was the best thing going at that time and he suggested Counting Crows. I think it's a great album and agree that the sort of fractured vocals are part of what give some of the songs their pathos. And Rain King is one of the great singalong songs of all time.

I love to listen to Counting Crows (this song in particular) on a rainy day when I don't have to be anyplace or come up with any really complicated thinky-thoughts. There's just something about this band that makes me relax, or cry if I need to cry and can't seem to work up a good angst.
I can almost read Stingray firing off a snide comment here - "WHINER!" (My response would be, "Well, yeah, but so what?") ETA: Okay, not Stingray, but a_genuine_find. Maybe Stingray's in the bathroom and missed this song.

The PSD button is one of the world's greatest inventions ever.
I just can't get beyond his whiney voice. The rest is just ordinary pop, nothing distinctive. But that's like just my opinion, man.

1993Round Here is sublime like few rock/pop songs ever are. It's also sung well, played at just the right tempo, with just enough instrumental accompaniment to maintain its sublime effect. Counting Crows are what the Cowboy Junkies could be if they had talent.

For a about 3 months now since I was told about Radio Paradise, I've played it a couple hours a night while I'm working online at home and hadn't read any comments until yesterday after the friend that had initially sent me the link to RP, mentioned them (the comments).

Great song from a great album. Too bad it's so trendy to hate this band 'cause the music is really quite wonderful.
the rate of this particular song depends on rate of vocal work completely...
Their one perfect moment. They had a few other great ones but this one they just nailed!
Suggest you read the thoughtful appraisal by jonno_norton.
Completely revolting noise coming from the singer.
Although I get a sense of "aren't I wonderful" from these guys, this is a moving, intelligent song.
Looking forward to hearing something from their 2014 album on RP.
Surprised at the hating on this track/band. I had no idea so many disliked it.

Clearly there's a lot of hatred for this song, but I always enjoy listening to it--and the entire album, actually. Musically it's interesting and I've always been intrigued by the lyrics. Is he talking about street people/children? Always wondered....Anyway--like his phrasing and his voice. I suppose it was overplayed, but I hardly ever hear it anymore, and it still seems fresh to me.
Following Hot Tuna with this is, well, inexplicable. What de frog? Superlative followed by emo/angst/mediocrity... Is my opinion of this band obvious? These guys were emo in advance of the term, but there is no credit due.
Unique Style of musical emanations....

Lots of comments going on here, nice to see the enthusiasm about Counting Crows, even from the haters, but it's a lot more simple than "this is drivel" or "most overhyped song of the 90s" I think we can all agree this album is far from drivel or anything close to the most anything of the 90s aside from most under-appreciated, freshman-release album of the 90s; this came to full fruition later in the early 2000s as the indie scene that this and so many other unsung albums of the 90s (camper van beethoven, neutral milk hotel, etc) had begun to inspire before their time. I wouldn't compare Counting Crows to either of those bands in any other circumstance, but the fact is they weren't Garbage or Nirvana in the 90s and they sang lyrically complex songs.
Now, what I really came here to talk about is the follow-up albums. If you loved this album, and had ill feelings towards the albums that came after it, I have this to say to you: Go spend the time with Recovering the Satellites. Just do it. Don't listen to a track here and skip and then hit another track and skip and find two or three you like. Sit down and listen to the entire thing from front to back. This is the only way to experience any record anyway, and Counting Crows is a band that you can really get into by doing this. The songs at the end of the album are so good like the feeling you got on August and Everything After, but you really need the lead-in of the earlier tracks in the album to set the mood correctly for them. There are a lot of mirrored sentiments and feelings in Recovering the Satellites, they just changed their sound slightly. I think Recovering the Satellites sounds a lot like an early precursor to what Guster ended up doing with a few of their hit tracks. The feeling I get is very similar.
In conclusion: I don't think Counting Crows is an indie band, haters go find something better to do because this isn't the band you are looking for, and fans don't keep sleeping on the follow-up albums.
I do admit thought they completely went pop and sold out their audience with that song from Shrek with the animated bunny in the music video. I obviously stopped paying attention around that time and don't have my facts straight, but their first 2 albums are good and deserve respect.

Yes, when he tries to vamp or improvise it is cringe-making. You can tell that the discipline of a good producer (T-Bone Burnett?) kept them in bounds on August...d-don wrote:

Is this an audience or an oil painting? Don't forget to try the veal.
The customer dines at a familiar restaurant. The meal does not meet his expectations. The diner is self-indulgent?
Uh-oh - noun confusion! Do you mean the "diner" being the establishment serving the food or being the person consuming the food? Either way, I find this tune to be rather fowl, but I can understand why others may like it. To each his own.

Breaks no new ground, but solid just the same..
Great album!
