Did they keep reusing the ball back in 1923? In cricket the wear on the ball is a major part of the game so the fans have to give it back. A few years back, an Australian player was caught with sandpaper in his pocket, putting wear on one side of the ball. He was told to do it by the captain and another senior player. Shameful. The three of them were suspended for several years.
If they do have to replace the ball for some reason, someone brings out a briefcase with several balls that have various amounts of wear and the umpire choses the one closest to the ball it is replacing. The pomp looks pretty wanky.
I'll link to the article tonight but in 1920 a guy was beaned with a dirty, grass-stained ball that was hard to see in the fading twilight. He died. Whether it was a rule change or just umpires reacting, they started using clean baseballs throughout the game. Although when it became "any scuff" and not just dirt or grass that got a ball replaced, I think that got more and more severe over the years. Now if it even touches the ground they throw it out.

Before the Home Run Derby at the All-Star game, Kyle was hitting a HR every 10.94 at bats. Since.... one every 15.92.
Schwarber isn't playing the field (much) vs. PCA's ability... and still... I'm not sure most of the Phillies would trade him for PCA even up. I would.... but he is the heart and soul of that team with Harper.
Well it's *checks watch* September and that was the first edge-of-my-seat game where I didn't assume we'd find a way to lose. I mean we tried, but survived extras. The funny thing is zero of our opening day bullpen is playing, we're on our 4th? 5th? catcher of the season, and the quarter-billion-dollar left side of the infield is injured, so some AA and AAA players are getting to play. And the Giants haven't been this much fun to watch in over 2 years.
All right Giants, it's that time of year, that final stretch, to really get that special something going so you can have a run at the pennant...next year.
It's getting to where winning doesn't matter as much as it should. That 13-12 game the other day was a lot of fun and the outcome was 100% consistent with all other interesting games this season. Like when JFW and I saw them in Denver. "Oh, we lost? Well it was a fun game, tra-la."
Just where the owner wants us/me: Paying for the product, not the results. Well as long as they don't just stink, that's better than some teams.
I do think Vitello might be playing a longer game than we hoped but it will turn out okay in a few years.
And it's starting to seem like the farm system might not be a wasteland anymore.
